Institute Hall, First Floor, Gawler Civic Centre. Celebrate the festive season with the Gawler Town Band. Deck the halls and add some Christmas cheer during this fun morning melody show, inspired by your favourite Christmas Carols, big band tunes and film favourites. The Gawler Town Band have been entertaining the local community for 160 years, evolving from a handful of brass players into a modern concert band. Founded in 1860, the Gawler Town Band was known as Riggs' Gawler Band and performed at many local events and functions. In 1921, the Riggs' Gawler Band and the Phoenix Brass Band merged to form the Gawler and District Band and competed in contests in 1924 and 1930-1936. The Band went into recess after the Second World War and was reformed in 1957. Roy Wilcox was appointed conductor and the group re-named to be Gawler Town Band. By 1961, twenty eight players were registered. Bert Hutchins succeeded Wilcox in 1966. From the late 1930s up to the 1980s five Hutchins brothers (Herb, Arthur, Bert, Hector and Percy) played in the band. From 1981 onwards, Gawler Town Band has been conducted by Peter Hutchins, Mike Ward, Maddy Sheridan, Bruce Raymond and Neil Edwards. Our current conductor Conor Roche, took over in 2018. Gawler Town Band performs in many local events including Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Adelaide Colonial Dancers' Ball, Gawler Village Fair, Remembrance Day, Gawler Carols and competitions including Hahndorf Band Festival and Playford 3 plus Ensembles. Gawler Town Band has grown to over thirty five members and is considered to be a modern concert band, with woodwind instruments as well as traditional horns.
